Rüdiger Spies, LL.M.


Ruediger Spies is a founding partner of the firm. His technical focus is on computer sciences, telecommunications, semiconductor technologies, robotics, automotive technologies, digital farming and similar high-tech fields. He also advises clients on IP strategies, FTO analyses and IP valuations.

Ruediger Spies, LL.M. has been working in the field of intellectual property since 2004. He is a German and European patent attorney and holds a Master of Intellectual Property and Management (MIPLM), LL.M. degree. Before founding LifeTech IP in 2014, Mr. Spies worked for a renowned, long-established law firm in Munich until 2007. Thereafter, he worked as associate with a newly founded, fast-growing patent law firm.

From 2007 to 2011, Rüdiger Spies was a member of the German Patent Attorneys’ Association’s Committee for Patent Valuation and then for two terms on the Committee for Software. In mid-2025, Mr. Spies withdraw from his law firm management obligations to an Of Council position.

His core technology areas cover the entire high-tech field including computer-implemented inventions (hardware and software, AI/machine learning, Computer-Vision, quantum computers), robotics, nano- and quantum technologies, semiconductor technology, cryptography, renewable energies (solar technology), telecommunications technologies (mobile communications) and classic electrotechnical and electronic systems. He works also in classic fields of technology.

His broad technical background is based on more than 30 years of industry experience as a software developer and project manager at GEI (now T-Systems) and management member at IBM in Germany, England, France (European Headquarters) and Austin/USA, where he held positions ranging from technical project manager to European brand manager. In addition, he has worked as Business Unit Manager New Media for a database company (Informix), as Director Telecom Industries for an IT and management consulting company (EDS/AT Kearney) and finally as Vice President for industry analyst firms (e.g., META Group Inc. (now Gartner; among others: worldwide lead analyst for SAP), IDC Inc., Experton AG, PAC/CXP/BARC). Mr. Spies is currently continuing his work as industry analyst in parallel with BARC (Business Application Research Center) as a BARC Research Fellow, which also gives him deep insights into the latest technologies and market trends.

Ruediger Spies studied physics (specializing in semiconductor physics) in Hamburg, graduating with a degree in physics. He also worked at the Institute of Electrical Engineering at the University of Aachen (RWTH). Finally, he was awarded the title Master of Intellectual Property and Management, (MIPLM), LL.M. by the Centre d’Études Intellectuelle de la Propriétè Intellectuelle of the University of Strasbourg.
